Article Snippet: tality and morbidity in young children.4,6,9 Various terms have been used to describe abusive head trauma in children, including “whiplash shaken baby syndrome” or “shaken baby syndrome.” Shaken baby syndrome is an extremely serious form of nonaccidental head injury that results from the rapid acceleration, deceleration, and rotation of an infant’s head being forcefully shaken while the infant is held by the trunk.. Shaken baby syndrome is largely restricted to children younger than 3 years of age and the majority of incidents occur during the 1st year of life.. One study examining the epidemiology of the condition in Scotland estimated it to be 24.6 cases per 100,000 children younger than 1 year of age.1 In a population-based study in the United Kingdom, the incidence of SDHs, as a marker of severe nonaccidental head injury, was found to be 21/100,000 children younger than the age of 1 year and 12.8/100,000 children younger than the age of 2 years.11 To the best of our knowledge, only one other study of nonaccidental head injury in Australia has been performed.10 The authors evaluated 49 cases over a 5-year period. |
